High-visibility police operation held in Chester ahead of busy Christmas period

Police carried out a high-visibility operation in Chester city centre this week as officers stepped up patrols ahead of the busy Christmas period.
On Wednesday 10 December, officers were out engaging with shoppers, businesses and visitors, offering advice and carrying out foot patrols around key areas of the city.
The operation drew attention thanks to mounted officers from Greater Manchester Police, whose two horses stopped regularly to chat with members of the public.
Specialist “Digi dogs” were also brought into the city to train in searching for hidden digital devices, while the Roads and Crime Unit conducted drink- and drug-driving checks.
The Underwater Search Team carried out proactive searches along the canal, and armed officers were also on visible patrol.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service joined the operation, and the police Safety Bus was stationed in the city centre to offer crime-prevention advice.
The day also included Project Servator deployments, a tactic using uniformed and plain-clothes officers trained to spot suspicious behaviour.
They spoke with businesses and members of the public to encourage reporting of anything unusual as footfall increases in the run-up to Christmas.
Inspector James Wilson of Chester Local Policing Unit said the aim was both reassurance and disruption:
“This operation provided a visible policing presence across Chester while disrupting criminality. We had lots of positive feedback – especially about the two police horses who drew quite the crowd.

“We’ll continue running similar operations throughout December, but we’d remind everyone to look out for each other and report anything that doesn’t feel right. You are our extra eyes and ears on the ground.”
Anyone with information about crime in their area can contact Cheshire Police online or by calling 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency.
