For anyone who’s ever dreamed of working with elephants, this could be the perfect opportunity.

Chester Zoo has announced a rare opening for a Keeper – Elephants, offering the chance to join the team caring for its breeding group of endangered Asian elephants.

The permanent, full-time role sits within the zoo’s Animal and Plant Directorate and provides an opportunity to contribute directly to global conservation and animal welfare.

The successful candidate will help care for one of the zoo’s most popular and important species, supporting the day-to-day management of the elephants and maintaining the highest standards of welfare and safety.

Applicants will need a degree or HND-level qualification in zoological science or equivalent experience, along with proven expertise in caring for large mammals such as rhinos, giraffes or elephants.

Strong observational skills, attention to detail and experience working to strict safety standards are essential. Familiarity with operant conditioning techniques and ZIMS record-keeping software would also be an advantage.

The permanent role offers £26,500 per year, based on 40 hours a week worked on a 10-day-out-of-14 rota including weekends and bank holidays.

Staff benefits include 33 days’ annual leave, a zoo pass with free family tickets, discounted gym membership, access to wellbeing and employee assistance programmes, a retail and cinema discount scheme, and a pension with employer contributions of up to 9%.

Chester Zoo employs around 1,000 people and is recognised globally for its conservation work. The zoo’s teams are actively involved in breeding, research and education programmes supporting endangered species around the world.

Applications for the elephant keeper role close on 8 January 2026, though shortlisting and interviews may take place while the advert remains live.

A spokesperson for Chester Zoo said the role offers a “fantastic opportunity to work with a breeding group of Asian elephants, leading in the development of science and welfare for the species.”
