Free UK government campaign offers practical help for families navigating children’s screen time

The UK government is directing parents to a free online safety toolkit this Easter, as a consultation on tougher rules for social media platforms approaches its midpoint.
The “You Won’t Know until You Ask” campaign, run by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, offers practical advice and conversation starters to help families talk about harmful content online during the school holidays.
More than 120,000 families have visited the campaign website since it launched in February.
A separate consultation on children’s online safety is currently open and closes on 26 May.
It includes proposals for minimum age limits on social media, overnight curfews on features such as infinite scrolling and autoplay, and tighter restrictions on AI chatbots for young people.
The government says more than 38,000 people have responded since the consultation launched a month ago.
Dedicated versions are available for both parents and young people.
Kanishka Narayan, Online Safety Minister, said: “I’ve been hearing from parents and children across the country, and it’s clear this matters deeply to families.
“Platforms must be held accountable, and they will be.
“We are taking action to make sure they meet their responsibilities.
“But I’ve also heard that parents want support, not just reassurance.
“Regulation alone won’t change culture overnight, and that’s why we’re giving families free, practical tools to have those conversations at home.”
