Fake ‘parking fine’ texts hitting phones across North Wales again say police

North Wales Police have issued a warning after members of the public reported receiving fake text messages claiming to be from their local council.
The messages tell recipients they must pay an outstanding Parking Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) by following a link included in the text. Police say these messages are fraudulent.
A spokesperson for the North Wales Police Cyber Crime Unit said:
“Members of the public across North Wales continue to receive text messages claiming to be from the Council, advising them that they need to pay outstanding parking ticket fines (PCN) via a link sent to them.”
“They will never send a text message asking you to pay a PCN. If you receive a text message, do not make any payment and do not provide your bank details. Delete the text message.”

Police advise anyone who is unsure about a message to contact their local council directly to check if it is genuine.
Legitimate PCNs are issued either by Neighbourhood Enforcement Officers or by post using details provided by the DVLA.
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of the scam should report it to the national fraud reporting service at https://orlo.uk/Report_Fraud_Cxb2H
or call 0300 123 2040.
Scam text messages can also be forwarded to 7726, and fake websites can be reported to the National Cyber Security Centre.
