Easter is one of the busiest periods on the roads. Here’s why basic vehicle checks matter more than ever

Almost half of drivers have broken down on a motorway or major A-road at some point, with nearly a quarter saying the experience could have been prevented with simple vehicle checks.
New survey figures released by National Highways show 49% of driving licence holders in the North West have broken down on a major road as a driver or passenger during their lifetime.
Of those, 23% said the breakdown could have been avoided with basic checks before setting off.
National Highways, which operates motorways in England, is urging drivers to check their vehicles ahead of the Easter bank holiday, which runs from Thursday 2 April to Monday 6 April.
Colin Stevenson, Road Safety Information Lead at National Highways, said: “In the North West, 49% of people say they’ve experienced a breakdown on a major road, and 23% say it could have been avoided.
“A few simple checks can help to prevent many of the breakdowns we see each year and help drivers avoid unexpected delays, cost and stress.”
Nationally, those who have broken down reported an average delay of just over two hours.
Drivers described the experience as stressful, with 42% saying they felt stressed, 34% anxious and 34% frustrated.
Those without breakdown cover reported paying around £229 for roadside assistance.
National Highways is promoting a four-point pre-journey check it calls T.R.I.P.
The first step is to top up fuel or electric charge, oil and screen wash.
Drivers are also advised to rest properly before travelling, taking a minimum 15-minute break every two hours on long journeys.
Checking tyre pressure and tread is the third step, along with a visual check of the vehicle for any obvious issues.
The fourth is to prepare — planning the route, checking weather forecasts and packing essentials in case of delays.
Tyre problems, running out of fuel and overheating are among the most common causes of breakdowns.
