Police have issued a warning after reports of young men approaching homes across North Wales and attempting to sell household goods in what is known as the “Nottingham Knockers” scam.

North Wales Police said the individuals go door-to-door claiming to be part of a rehabilitation scheme, often presenting fake identification to appear genuine.

Officers warned that while selling low-quality goods, they may also be assessing properties for potential burglaries.

The scam, which has been reported in several parts of the UK, is known for targeting elderly or vulnerable residents.

A police spokesperson said: “These sellers can be aggressive, using pressure tactics or verbal abuse if householders refuse to buy. In some areas outside North Wales, incidents have escalated into violence, with offenders forcing their way into homes. While that hasn’t been reported here yet, there have been reports of aggressive behaviour.”

Residents are being advised not to open the door if approached by a suspected Nottingham Knocker, and to report any suspicious activity to police.

“If you’re visited by Nottingham Knockers, please report to North Wales Police as soon as you can by calling 101 to give us the best chance to attend your area and apprehend the individuals,” police said. “Try to note down any details, including vehicle registration.”

Officers added that anyone who feels threatened or is treated aggressively on their doorstep should call 999 immediately.

Residents are also being encouraged to inform neighbours, especially those who are elderly or live alone, to help protect them from doorstep scams.
