Demolition of ‘unsafe’ Deeside church hall approved

A church hall that has survived for over 100 years is set to be demolished after being branded unsafe.
Flintshire County Council planning officers have ruled that St David’s Church Institute in Connah’s Quay can be knocked down due to its advanced state of disrepair.
The project – which was signed off by churchwarden Elizabeth Tattum – will take five days to complete and will be carried out by Calder Valley Environmental.
The Institute itself has served for over a century as the community hall connected to St David’s Church – acting as a polling station, exhibition centre and events venue.
When St David’s was first built however the Institute was not part of the plan.
When the current St David’s Church was built in 1914 it was actually supposed to be the church hall. When the parish ran out of money to complete the project they elected instead to upgrade the original building, consecrating it as the church within the Church in Wales.
Next to it was built a more modest church hall – known as the Institute.
In recent years the condition of that building has deteriorated and for safety reasons must now be taken down.
In the planning appraisal officers state: “The building is unsafe and will be
demolished by Calder Valley. The ground is to be made good following
demolition.
“An Asbestos Demolition Survey has been provided which confirms very low
levels. Prior approval is not required under the Town and Country Planning Act 1995.”
