Broughton’s Specsavers boss up for two Wales honours

A Broughton optometrist has been recognised among Wales’s leading eye care professionals after being shortlisted for two awards at the Optometry Wales Awards 2025.
Kelly Gibson, ophthalmic director at Specsavers Broughton, is a finalist in both the Optometrist of the Year and Health Board Support categories.
The nominations recognise her commitment to patient care and her contribution to developing community eye health services across North Wales.
“It was such a surprise to be shortlisted for not one but two categories this year,” said Ms Gibson. “For me, it’s always been about doing the very best for our customers and making sure they get the care they need as quickly as possible. To be recognised for that is a real honour.”
Since opening the Broughton store with her business partners ten years ago, Ms Gibson has worked to expand access to advanced eye care services, helping reduce pressure on local hospital departments.
She has completed multiple advanced qualifications allowing her to diagnose, treat and manage a wide range of conditions – including glaucoma and urgent eye problems – directly from the store under the Wales General Ophthalmic Services (WGOS) programme.
Introduced in 2023, WGOS aims to give patients faster access to eye care through their local optician.
Ms Gibson has also played a leading role in implementing the scheme across North Wales through her work as optometric advisor to Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB). The board became the first in Wales to fully introduce WGOS earlier this year, a milestone she helped to deliver.
She said: “I’m proud to see both the BCUHB health board and our store leading the way in delivering services that are making a real difference to people across North Wales.
“By offering treatments in the community, we’re helping ease pressure on already-stretched hospital eye departments while ensuring people are seen quickly. Supporting the NHS in this way, while still delivering the highest standard of care to our own customers, is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.”
The winners of the Optometry Wales Awards 2025 will be announced at a ceremony in Cardiff on 29 November.
