How the new system works

This is the first Senedd election under a closed-list proportional system. Wales is divided into 16 constituencies, each electing six Members — for a Senedd of 96, up from 60.

Voters cast a single ballot for a party, not a candidate. Seats are allocated in proportion to vote share, with the candidate at the top of each party's list elected first.

49 seats are needed for an outright majority.
