Queues stretch to Ewloe Green School as St David’s roundabout works disrupt Ewloe traffic

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Drivers travelling through Ewloe faced queues stretching back to Ewloe Green School as temporary three-way traffic signals at St David’s roundabout disrupted travel this morning.

The traffic lights are in place while contractors carry out work on the junction as part of a scheme to replace it with a Dutch-style roundabout.

Residents posting on social media said conditions had been bad from the early morning.

“It’s backed up to Ewloe Green School from 7am this morning,” one resident said.

The disruption also caused tailbacks along the A494 beyond the Queensferry Asda junction.

One commuter said conditions coming home from work at 5pm yesterday were just as bad as they had been during the morning rush.

Work has also been taking place for weeks at Ewloe Interchange. This week has seen a new configuration with the lane close to the roundabout blocked off.

[Once complete, the roundabout will be a welcome relief for those on foot who have had to contend with a junction that currently offers no formal crossing points.]

One motorist said the journey from Hawarden to Ewloe Green had taken longer than a drive to Manchester Airport would have.

Several residents questioned why construction had started the week schools went back after Easter, rather than during the two-week holiday period when traffic on the route is lighter.

“Why did they wait until the schools were back?” one resident said. “All the extra traffic, it could have been done and finished during the school holidays.”
One parent said their 14-year-old had captured the mood on the way to school.

“It’s not a roundabout anymore,” the teenager said. “It’s just an ABOUT now.”

Separate delays were reported in Hawarden village, where residents said scaffolding on The Bank also required temporary signals, adding to congestion in the surrounding streets.

Flintshire County Council is replacing St David’s roundabout with a Dutch-style roundabout, a design that differs from a standard UK junction by placing crossings on each approach road rather than at the entry point itself.

Under the new layout, drivers will be required to give way to pedestrians and cyclists at crossing points before they enter the roundabout.

Footways around the junction are to be widened to at least three metres, and toucan crossings, which allow both pedestrians and cyclists to cross on a single signal, are planned on all A494 slip roads.

Flintshire County Council was asked last Wednesday about timescales for works on St David’s roundabout and had not responded at the time of publication.
