Shotton Town Council has co-opted Sean Bibby to serve as councillor for Higher Shotton ward.

Mr Bibby tweeted:

County Hall in Mold did not receive the minimum number of 10 electors expressing their wish for an election to take place, this allowed the council to co-opt the new member, basically choose an appropriate person from those who express an interest.

Deputy Leader of Flintshire County Council was one of the first to congratulate Mr Bibby on Twitter:

bbb

Deeside.com has asked Councillor Bibby to explore the possibility of the council catching up with the rest of society, he is on Twitter which is a good start, and we hope he can generate some interest with other councillors in developing a ‘digital’ presence with a website and social media account.

can we move away from this?

While using a couple of photocopied A4 pieces of paper to advertise councillor vacancies is some sort of statutory requirement, its perhaps not the most expansive way to generate interest in vacancies, or indeed any other council related news, which in turn doesn’t really make local town council democracy that accessible to the citizens of Shotton and Deeside, using the power of ‘digital’ may help.
