Students across the country will today will find out if the months of hard work and revision have paid off as they receive their A Level results. More often than not the process of receiving your results can be quite daunting – however don’t panic if you haven’t got a place at university.

Andy Phillips, admissions manager, Wrexham Glyndwr University has sent us some top tips listed below: “So, you’ve found out you’re A-Level results and your attention today switches towards securing a university place. Whether you are still undecided about what and where you want to study, or you didn’t secure the grades you’d hoped and are looking at alternatives, Clearing can be a smooth process given the right approach.”

“If you missed the conditions of your firm or insurance place and your place hasn’t been confirmed on your UCAS Track on Thursday morning, don’t be afraid to call the University directly and explain the situation. Universities can be sympathetic and teams of advisers will be able to offer guidance and give a decision, often immediately”

  • Familiarise yourself with the Clearing process. You can find a full list of places available and information on the process at ucas.com/clearing2017
  • Research. If you haven’t got a university place, think about subjects you’d like to study alongside questions such as whether you want to study away from home, or whether you want to experience city life or a campus university
  • Prepare. Have all your results to hand, plus some additional information. You will need a list of your new A Level results; GCSE results; additional qualifications (eg diplomas, certificates, music qualifications); UCAS PiD and Clearing number. It’s really important to have all this information ready before calling, because by the time you hang up to find it someone may have taken your place! Universities will also appreciate your effort in being able to produce this information efficiently and quickly to help streamline the process
  • Be open to other suggestions. Although we may not be able to offer you the course you originally apply for, we may suggest another course which we feel may suit you based on your previous study and interests. There’s no rush to make a decision but do some further research as it may just be what you were after but didn’t realise the option existed!
  • Be proactive, determined, focused and have confidence in your ability. Thousands of other students will be applying through Clearing and those who show the confidence and fortitude to chase places will be looked upon favourably by admissions tutors.
